Actions1. Relieves toxicity, kills parasites, dries dampness, & alleviates itching: used as an external wash for scabies, ringworm, & rashes due to dampness or damp-heat. Also for swollen & painful throat or eyes as well as jaundice.2. Stops bleeding & alleviates diarrhea: for chronic diarrhea, blood in the stool, uterine bleeding, & vaginal dischrge. Also used topically for nosebleeds, hemorrhoidal bleeding, bleeding gums, & bleeding due to external injurues. 3. Clears heat & expels phlegm: for wind-phlegm disorders manifested by irritability, delirium, & convulsions. Can also be used for cough with difficult to expectorate sputum. |

CautionsAlways use with caution when taken internally. Contraindicated in cases of weak digestive systems or in the absence of damp-heat. May antagonize mu li & may counteract ma huang. Toxicity: Has a strong stimulatory effect on the body's tissues & is therefore almost always applied externally. Overdose can cause ulceration, vomiting, diarrhea, & shock. |
