Taste: Bitter, Acrid • Temperature: Cold • Category: Downward Draining; Regulate Blood • Sub Category: Cathartic; Stop Bleeding

Dosage

1.5-3g, 1g powder

Actions

1. Drains water downward & drives out congested fluid: for relatively moderate accumulation of fluids in the chest & flanks with such symptoms as labored breathing, dull pain in the lateral aspect of the chest, expectoration of thick sputum, & a thick, greasy tongue coating. 2 Reduces swelling & dissipates nodules: applied topically for red, swollen, painful, toxic sores or scrofula.

Kidney, Large Intestine, Lung

Cautions

Contraindicated during pregnancy & in cases of edema associated with cold from deficiency. Use wuth caution in weak patients. Traditionally this herb was considered incompatible with gan cao. Toxic.
