Chinese Prescription: Qing Gu San

English Translation: Cool the Bones Powder

Formula Type: Clear Heat from Deficiency

Actions: Clears heat from deficiency & alleviates steaming bone disorder.

Indications: Afternoon tidal fever or unremitting, chronic low-grade fever, a sensation of heat in the bones but with flesh that is not warm to the touch, irritability, insomnia, emaciation, lethargy, red lips, dark-red cheeks, night sweats, thirst, a dry throat, a red tongue with little coating, & a thin, rapid pulse.

Contraindications: Unknown.

Yin Chai Hu / Stellaria Root
Taste: Sweet • Temperature: Cool • Category: Clear Heat • Sub Category: Clear Def. Heat
Dosage 3-9g	Actions 1. Causes heat from deficiency to recede: for fire from yin deficiency with steaming bone disorder or any yin deficienct fever. 2. Clears heat & reduces childhood nutritional impairment: for fever, thirst, & irritability associated with childhood nutritional impairment due to accumulation with heat. 3. Cools the blood & stops bleeding: for such symptoms as coughing up blood, nosebleed, uterine bleeding, or blood in the urine due to reckless movement of hot blood.	Meridians Liver, Stomach	Cautions Contraindicated in cases of externally contracted wind-cold, & blood deficiency without fever.

Zhi Mu / Anemarrhena Rhizome
Taste: Bitter • Temperature: Cold • Category: Clear Heat • Sub Category: Drain Fire
Dosage 6-12g	Actions 1. Clears heat & drains fire: for high fever, irritability, thirst, & a rapid, flooding pulse in patterns of exessive heat in the Lungs & Stomach. Also for cough due to heat in the Lungs with expectoration of thick, yellow sputum. 2. Enriches yin & moistens dry conditions: for exhaustion or deficiency of Lung & Kidney yin wih heat signs such as night sweats, steaming bone disorder, irritability, afternoon or low-grade fevers, warmth in the five centers, & bleeding gums. Also for such Kidney heat signs as spermatorrrhea, nocturnal emissions, & abnormally elevated sexual drive. 3. Generates fluids & clears heat: for oral ulcers & in flammation due to yin deficiency as well as wasting & thirsting disorder.	Meridians Lung, Stomach, Kidney	Cautions Contraindicated in cases of diarrhea due to Spleen deficiency.

Hu Huang Lian / Picrorhiza Rhizome
Taste: Bitter • Temperature: Cold • Category: Clear Heat • Sub Category: Drain Damp
Dosage 3-9g	Actions 1. Drains damp-heat: for damp-heat dysenteric disorders or sores. 2. Clears heat from deficiency: for yin deficiency with heat signs. 3. Clears heat & reduces childhood nutritional impairment: most appropriate when this disorder Is accompanied by abdominal distention, afternoon fevers, & dysenteric diarrhea.	Meridians Liver, Stomach, Large Intestine	Cautions Use with caution in cases of Spleen or Stomach deficiency.

Di Gu Pi / Lycium Root Bark, Wolfberry Cortex
Taste: Sweet • Temperature: Cold • Category: Clear Heat • Sub Category: Clear Def. Heat
Dosage 6-15g	Actions 1. Drains fire from yin deficiency: for such symptoms as night sweats, steaming bone disorder with sweating, chronic low-grade fevers, irritability, & thirst. 2. Clears heat & stops coughing: for Lung heat cough or wheezing. 3. Clears heat & cools the blood: for nosebleed, vomiting of blood, & bloody urine due to the reckless movement of hot blood. 4. Drains floating fire in the Kidney channel: for toothache due to fire from deficiency.	Meridians Lung, Liver, Kidney	Cautions Contraindicated in cases of Stomach & Spleen cold from deficiency with loose stools, & in exterior disorders.

Qing Hao / Wormwood, aerial part
Taste: Bitter • Temperature: Cold • Category: Clear Heat • Sub Category: Relieve Summerheat
Dosage 3-9g, up to 24g	Actions 1. Clears summerheat: especially for summerheat with low fever, headache, dizziness, & a stifling sensation in the chest. 2. Clears fevers from deficiency: for fevers from either blood deficiency or as the sequelae of a febrile disease. Especially for unremitting fever or night fever & morning coolness with an absence of sweating. 3. Cools blood & stops bleeding: for purpuric rashes or nosebleed due to heat in the blood. 4. Checks malarial disorders & relieves heat: for the alternating fever & chills of malarial disorders.	Meridians Kidney, Liver, Gallbladder	Cautions Contraindicated in post partum women with blood deficiency, or in cases of cold from deficiency of the Spleen & Stomach. According to some traditional sources, this herb should not be used with sheng di huang or dang gui.

Qin Jiao / Gentiana Root (Macrophylla)
Taste: Bitter, Acrid • Temperature: Slightly Cold • Category: Dispel Wind-Damp-Heat • Sub Category: Pain Relieving
Dosage 4.5-12g	Actions 1. Dispels wind-dampness & relaxes the sinews: for wind-damp painful obstruction & cramping, especially in the extremitites. Can be used for conditions that are acute or chronic, cold or hot. 2. Clear heat from deficiency: for yin deficiency patterns that manifest with fever, including steaming bone disorder. 3. Resolves dampness & reduces jaundice due to damp-heat, especially in acute cases & in infants. 4. Moistens the Intestines & unblocks the bowels: for dry constipation. This herb is commonly used to counteract the drying qualities of other herbs that dispel wind-dampness.	Meridians Gallbladder, Liver, Stomach	Cautions Contraindicated in cases with frequent urination, or chronic pain with emaciation, or Spleen deficiency with diarrhea. Taking a relatively high dose can cause nausea & vomiting.

Bie Jia / Turtle Shell - Dorsal, Chinese
Taste: Salty • Temperature: Slightly Cold • Category: Tonic • Sub Category: Tonify Yin
Dosage 9-30g, cook 30 minutes before adding other ingredients	Actions 1. Nourishes the yin & anchors the yang: for yin deficiency with fever, steaming bone disorder, night sweats, or consumption. Often used when there are also symptoms of internal movement of Liver wind. 2. Invigorates the blood, promotes menstruation, & dissipates nodules: for such symptoms as chest & flank accumulations causing pain & amenorrhea, as well as malarial disorders with palpable masses. Also for excessive menstruation due to hot blood.	Meridians Liver, Spleen	Cautions Contraindicated during pregnancy & in cases of cold from deficiency of the Spleen with reduced appetite & diarrhea. Also contraindicated where an exterior disorder has not been fully resolved. Use with caution in cases of impotence. According to some traditional sources, this substance antagonizes ming fan.

Gan Cao / Licorice Root (Chinese)
Gan Cao - Licorice Root - Large Gan Cao - Licorice Root - Medium Gan Cao - Licorice Root - Small Zhi Gan Cao - Honey-baked Licorice Root
Taste: Sweet • Temperature: Neutral (raw root) • Category: Tonic / Harmonize • Sub Category: Tonify Qi
Dosage 2-12g	Actions 1. Tonifies the Spleen & augments the qi: commonly used for Spleen deficiency with shortness of breath, lassitude, & loose stools. Also for qi or blood deficiency patterns with an irregular or intermittent pulse & /or palpitations. 2. Moistens the Lungs & stops coughing: for coughing & wheezing. Because of its neutral properties, it can be used for either heat or cold in the Lungs. 3. Clears heat & relieves fire toxicity: used raw for carbuncles, sores, or sore throat due to fire toxin. For this purpose, it can be taken internally or applied topically. 4. Moderates spasms & alleviates pain: for painful spasms of the abdomen or legs. 5. Moderates & harmonizes the characteristics of other herbs: by virtue of its sweet, neutral, & moderating properties, this herb moderates hot & cold herbs, & mitigates the violent properties of other herbs. Since it is said to enter all 12 primary channels, it can lead & conduct other herbs into the channels. 6. Used as an antidote for a variety of toxic substances, both internally & topically. 7. The raw root clears heat & relieves toxicity, the honey-fried tonifies the middle & moderates spasms.	Meridians All 12 channels (principally the Heart, Lung, Spleen, & Stomach)	Cautions Contraindicated in cases of excess dampness, nausea, or vomiting. May be in compatible with jing da ji, yuan hua, gan sui, & hai zao, & may antagonize yuan zhi. The toxicity of gan cao is very low, but if taken long-term it may cause hypertension &/or edema. Glycyrrhetinic acid has been reported to cause a reduction in the activity of the thyroid & a reducation in the basal metabolic rate.
